Interesting Uses of Barcodes
Wednesday, February 20, 2019

The most common use of barcodes is to help track inventory at grocery stores, but there are so many other interesting ways to use them in daily life. They are a really innovative technology that shouldn’t be limited by us in any way. There are more creative applications of the 2D and linear barcode which are explored below.

1. Entertainment

Barcodes can also be used for travel, movies, and other events. They can be used to check the validity of the ticket before entering the venue. This helps keep track of the venue, counts the number of sales, and increases the security for the event. People with fake tickets cannot get into the venue at all.

To remain more environmentally friendly and cut down on costs, event organizers can also allow customers to purchase the barcode online, print it, and bring it to the venue. They don’t even have to print the barcode any more since 2D barcode scanning can also be done through smart phones.

2. Advertisement

Here, a wide use of 2D barcode scanning can be seen. Businesses continue to make it more interesting and interactive for customers to engage with the business. Smartphones can now scan such barcodes and get discounts and more information on the company. These codes can be advertised through posters and newspapers, which makes them really accessible to the general public.

3. Relief and Awareness

In Japan, barcodes are really popular in fast food chains, train stations, and retail stores. However, the biggest use of these barcodes came during the 2011 Tsunami and earthquake in Japan. These barcodes were helpful in spreading information on how to donate to charity. They also helped people know more about their location.

4. Tracking Trees

Illegal logging is one of the main reasons that deforestation is happening at such an unsustainable ratio. Helvata began to use plastic barcode tags on trees that had to be scanned by the local tree cutters after chopping it down. This kept track of all the trees being cut down and preventing illegal logging. This was a sustainable practice that has protected the forest despite the continuous supply chain of wood. Countries are now using this method to create a national-based tree tracking mechanism to control illegal logging and deforestation.

5. Boosting Recycling

A lot of companies are adding barcodes to recycling bins. When the trash is picked up, the bin is scanned. With each scanning, the barcode records the data and turns the value of the recycled items into dollar amounts. People can redeem the money for coupons and discounts, which makes this an incentive-based recycling.
